The History of Sariska National Park

The wildlife sanctuary is popular since the time of Mahabharata as it is believed that these dense forests and tough terrains sheltered the Pandavas during their exile. Pandupole is one of the most visited places in Sariska and is believed to be the place where Bhima met Hanuman as per Hindu mythology. The Sariska National Park was approved as wildlife sanctuary in 1955.

In 1978, given the status of a tiger reserve that made it part of India’s Project Tiger, the wildlife sanctuary was declared a national park in 1990, with a total area of Approx 273.8 kms.

Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is smaller and less crowded as compared to other major parks and hence the chances of sightings are better. The Sariska National Park is just Approx 4 hours drive from Delhi, which is considered a weekend getaway for corporate and other working class in NCR. Till of May 2020, the total number of tigers was 20 of which 11 are females, 5 are males and the rest are cubs.

Gates and Zones to Visit at the Sariska Tiger Reserve

There are 2 gates in Sariska National Park, the first and most popular is Sariska Gate, which has 3 zones. These zones namely Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3 are most preferred, and tiger sightings are maximum as well as beautiful scenarios. The name of the second gate is Telha Gate which is Approx 80 kms away from Sariska Gate and Zone 4 can be reached from this gate. There Sightings are rare here as compared to Sariska Gate.

Kinds of Safaris at Sariska National Park

Exclusive Jeep Safari: An open gypsy that can hold up to Maximum 6 passengers (no-sharing). An expert tiger tracker from Wild Trails will be assigned to the customer who chooses to opt for this option. Here, Pickup and drop can be scheduled from the accommodation.

Shared Jeep Safari: An open gypsy that can seat up to Maximum 6 passengers, however, it will be shared among other tourists. There would be no expert tiger tracker; instead a guider will be assigned by the Forest Department. There is no option to upkeep the customer from the accommodation.

Safari timings in Sariska National Park may vary slightly depending on the weather at different times of the year. Only pre-approved vehicles can enter Sariska National Park. The best time to visit Sariska is anytime between October and May. The Pleasant time to visit especially for tiger sighting is between March to May. Sariska Tiger Reserve is ideal for sightseeing as the forest is comparatively small.

Bhangarh Fort is about 30 km from Sariska National Park. Alwar city is known for several forts and lakes. The Chand Baori Step Well, located at a distance of about 50 km from Sariska, is another major Sightseeing.
